Excavators demolish the old Kennebec Journal building on Saturday morning at the corner of Western Avenue and Senator Way in Augusta. Bangor Savings Bank will be an anchor tenant at 274 Western Ave., the former home of the Kennebec Journal. The MaineToday Media Inc. newspaper vacated the 50-year-old building last March and moved its front-office operations to the Augusta Business Park, in north Augusta, and a distribution center to Leighton Road. According to a September story in the Kennebec Journal, plans call for a new two-story, 5,400-square-foot bank building; a 17,000-square-foot building to house Goodwill Industries of Northern New England; a 6,000-square-foot building behind the Irving gas station for a restaurant or retail store; and a 5,000-square-foot retail building along Crossing Way.
