Hallowell Public Works employees Chris Buck, left, and Tony LaPlante unveil a new street lamp Monday on Water Street in Hallowell. City crews and electrician Rick Godbout installed four new poles and replaced 22 lights with lanterns on the sidewalk along Water Street. The LED lights are expected to provide the same illumination at half the cost, according to Hallowell City Manager Michael Starn. Funds were granted by Efficiency Maine through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to cover $35,000 of the approximately $45,000 cost to upgrade the lights. “They told us the lights will last five years without touching them,” Starn said.
