GORHAM — The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that destroyed a two-car garage Sunday, the fourth suspicious fire in Gorham in two weeks.

Firefighters were called to a fire at 4:30 p.m. at 215 Buck St., less than a quarter-mile from a fire that damaged a house at 70 Spiller Road on March 27.

The garage was burning when they arrived, said Chief Robert Lefebvre. Firefighters were unable to save the garage but did stop the fire from spreading into the nearby house, though heat did burn some of the siding, he said.

The house is occupied but nobody was home at the time, Lefebvre said.

The garage fire is the latest in a string of suspicious fires. The first fire broke out at a vacant house at 70 Spiller Road on March 27 and another fire was set at 1:30 a.m. March 31 at the Gorham SnoGoers clubhouse, at 209 Mighty St.

At 6:50 a.m. on April 1, fire destroyed a vacant house at 5 Great Falls Road.

Investigators suspect an arsonist has set fires at the unoccupied structures and have been conducting interviews to try to identify a suspect.

An electrical inspector will try to determine the cause of the fire Tuesday morning, a public safety spokesman said.

Despite the proximity to the previous fires the Fire Marshall’s office has stopped short of declaring Sunday’s fire an arson.

They asked that anyone who saw anyone or anything suspicious in the area of 215 Buck St. contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 624-7076 or the Gorham Fire Department at 839-5581.
