WATERVILLE — No charges are pending in a car-and-pedestrian accident that happened Sunday at JFK Plaza off Kennedy Memorial Drive, according to Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey.

Rumsey said Alan Sutherland, 43, of Winslow, was taken by Delta Ambulance to Inland Hospital around 3 p.m. Sunday after a Toyota Prius hit him in front of the Hannaford supermarket.

The Prius driver, Hubert Fougere, 81, of Winslow, was turning from the travel lane into one of the aisles when the accident happened, Rumsey said.

“He turned and he saw an open parking space to his right and as he navigated into the space, he struck a pedestrian walking on the left side of the road and pushing a shopping cart full of groceries,” he said.

“He was looking right and didn’t see the person on the left. The vehicle ended up striking the pedestrian and partially running over his right foot and leg.”

A hospital spokeswoman said Monday that Sutherland was treated and released.
