BANGOR — Waterville’s run as king of Eastern Maine Class B baseball ended on the right arm of Foxcroft Academy’s Ryan Rebar.

Rebar did what few pitchers have been able the last three season, shut down the Purple Panthers’ offense. And when the Eastern Class B championship game started to turn from a pitchers’ duel into a hitting clinic, Rebar kept the Panthers’ bats at bay.

Rebar gave up just two hits, walking three and striking out 11, including the side in the seventh inning, leading Foxcroft Academy to a 10-2 win and the Ponies first regional title since 2002.

Foxcroft (15-5) will face Falmouth at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor at 11 a.m. Saturday for the Class B state title. Waterville, winner of the last two Class B state championships, ends the season at 17-2.

“I’m disappointed for the kids, but we’ve had a great run,” Waterville coach Don Sawyer said.

This game was scoreless through five innings, as neither Rebar or Waterville’s J.T. Whitten gave an inch. The Ponies finally broke the scoreless tie with two outs in the sixth when Rebar scored on Hunter Law’s bloop single to shallow right field.

After a Waterville error extended the sixth, the Ponies added five more runs. Cody Coiley and Luke Olson each hit a two-run double, and the Ponies sent 11 men to the plate. With the score 3-0, Whitten gave way to Brian Bellows, who pitched into the seventh before being relieved by Lance Lefebvre.

“J.T was in the groove, in the groove, in the groove, then all of a sudden…” Sawyer said. “They got guys on base, and that’s all that has to happen sometimes.”

Rebar, who threw 96 pitches in Foxcroft’s 6-0 semifinal win Saturday, benefited from the extra day of rest caused by a rain out Wednesday.

“I pitched back-to-back games on three days rest,” Rebar said. “The extra day helped out a ton. I got my curveball over for strikes, which was big.”

Kaleb Kane broke up Rebar’s no-hit bid with a single to lead off the sixth. After Dan Pooler walked, Whitten hit a two-run single to account for both of Waterville’s runs.

The Ponies added four insurance runs in the seventh, the big hit a two-run double by Forrest Law. Everyone in Foxcroft’s starting lineup had at least one hit, and the Ponies had 14 hits, 10 coming in the final two innings.

Waterville’s only other scoring opportunity came in the first inning. Racean Wood walked, took second on a Rebar balk, and went to third on a throwing error. Wood was stranded there, and the Panthers didn’t get another runner to third base until the sixth inning.

“I thought we missed an opportunity in the first inning,” Sawyer said.

Foxcroft had a chance to score in the fourth, when Caleb Richard and Rebar led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but Whitten pitched out of the jam and kept the game scoreless.
