BELFAST — Senior fullback Seth Wing rushed for two touchdowns to help the Gardiner football team sink Belfast 27-6 in a Pine Tree Conference Class B game that was delayed 30 minutes by lightning in the fourth quarter.
“We played up to our ability,” Gardiner coach Matt Burgess said. “We played much better defense and it was a nice feeling to have Seth Wing rush the ball a little bit.”
Wing rushed for a pair of 9-yard touchdowns as Gardiner led 20-0 at the half.
Senior quarterback Dennis Meehan also threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Jamison.
“We were able to get the ball in the perimeter,” Burgess said. “We were pretty well balanced.”
Winthrop 46, Sacopee 6: Danny Moody rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on eight carries to lead the Ramblers in the Western C Campbell Conference opener.
“We knew what we were up against,” said Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton, who won his 50th career game. “We expected this outcome.”
Zach Glazier rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown for Winthrop (1-0) as well. Glazier also returned a punt 55 yards for a score as Winthrop took a 46-0 lead into the half.
Zach Phinney rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown as well for Winthrop.
“We played well and the kids were physical all night,” Stoneton said. “We got better today.”
