FARMINGDALE — Four people were injured, two seriously, after a car crash Tuesday night that happened outside the fire department, police said.

Justin Nauman, 30, of Landisville, Pa., and his passenger, Kristle Kraft, 21, of Lancaster, Pa., were both taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what police described as serious injuries.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said in a release its deputies responded at 7:18 p.m. to the crash in front of the fire department at 296 Maine Ave.

Police said  Nauman was driving northbound on Maine Avenue “at a high rate of speed” in his 2003 Volkswagon sedan. The posted speed limit is 35 mph.

“Nauman apparently attempted to pass a vehicle by using the oncoming lane,” the sheriff’s release said. “The vehicle he was passing had stopped to make a left turn.”

Another vehicle, a 2006 GMC Envoy driven by Neil Tobey, 75, of Richmond, was heading southbound and Nauman collided with him head on, police said. 

A third vehicle, a 2000 Mercury Sable driven by 32-year-old Erica Kilde of Gardiner, was also heading southbound and rear-ended Tobey’s SUV. 

“The vehicle that Nauman was passing was not struck by any of those involved in the actual crash,” the release said.
 
Tobey and Kilde were taken to Maine General Medical Center in Augusta with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

“At the time of this collision, there was a meeting with the fire department personnel inside the fire department,” the sheriff’s release said. “This afforded the first responders with the opportunity for an extremely quick response.”

Police said speed is “definitely a factor in this collision and other contributing factors will be looked into as the inquiry continues.”
