WATERVILLE — United Way of Mid-Maine is seeking nearly $800,000 in donations this year to support its mission of improving the lives of area residents.
The fundraising drive began Wednesday with the announcement of the $782,000 goal and campaign leaders, Michael and Debbie Byrne, owners of Century 21 Surette Real Estate in Waterville.
The couple will focus on “opening doors” as a campaign theme because of the power that people and businesses have to create opportunities and hope to change a life, according to United Way president Tina Chapman in a press release about the fund drive.
It was an idea the Byrne’s saw during their working lives when people opened the door to a new home.
“We come across many ‘doors’ in a lifetime — doors into relationships, responsibilities and jobs,” Debbie Byrne said in the release. “If life is easy, the doors all open smoothly. If life is more difficult, doors require effort and help to open.”
The money will support the organization’s primary efforts: basics needs including food and shelter; financial stability and literacy; school readiness and life skills; as well as health and wellness.
The organization, based in Waterville, serves northern Kennebec, Somerset and western Waldo counties.
