WINSLOW — A reconstruction project at the Winslow Municipal Track is running over budget, and the excess could come from school district funds.

Town Manager Michael Heavener said the project, which began July 25, is $6,741 over the $200,000 budget. The gravel base for the rebuilt track originally was supposed to be 6 inches deep, but the plan was revised to a depth of 8 inches to allow for sufficient grade for the surface, which is 2 feet wider than the original 1986 design.

The cost overage includes the material, equipment and labor, Heavener said.

In July, the council authorized the town to borrow up to $200,000 for the project. Heavener said the school district has agreed to reimburse the town for any additional costs.

Site excavation and preparation was performed by town employees and a local contractor. Maine Tennis & Track — a surfacing company based in Gray — is paving the track with asphalt and adding a rubber surface.

The work performed by Maine Tennis & Track is on budget and on time, Heavener said. The track is scheduled to re-open Sept. 28.

The track, which opened in 1986, was a victim of neglect, Winslow High School Athletic Director Carrie Larrabee has said. It required resurfacing every 10 years, but it was resurfaced only once, in 1996. As a result, the rubber surface wore away, and the asphalt beneath deteriorated.

The track has been closed to competitive events for two seasons.
