In response to a commentary by M.D. Harmon on Oct 20, “Same-sex marriage would weaken essential nature of the institution.”
Things that weaken the institution of marriage include: Domestic violence, cheating spouses, alcoholism, poverty, casino gambling — for a partial list.
Same-sex marriage is less a threat to the “institution” than any of the above marital problem areas.
If anything, same-sex marriage broadens the definition of marriage, and makes it available to couples formerly barred from enjoying the joy and security that a good marriage can provide.
It is yet another example of where human rights can, and should, trump legal rights.
