Hallowell woman hurt in Winthrop Street crash
HALLOWELL — A city woman was injured Monday when the sport-utility vehicle she was driving slid out of control on Winthrop Street and hit a building.
Janice Cross, 83, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with minor injuries caused by the airbag going off, said Hallowell Police Sgt. Christopher Hutchings.
Cross’s vehicle struck the former home of WhipperSnappers Fine Fabric and Notions at 98 Second St., which sustained minor damage to its brickwork, Hutchings said.
The accident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. as Cross drove a 2010 Ford Edge down snow-covered Winthrop Street east toward the Kennebec River. Cross lost control of the car as she rounded a small, downhill curve near the railroad tracks, Hutchings said.
“She was probably going too fast for conditions and slid through the parking lot and struck the building,” Hutchings said. “Thankfully no cars were parked there.”
The Ford sustained significant front end damage and had to be towed away. No charges were filed, Hutchings said.
