Obama says the decision upholds the fundamental principle that in America – the wealthiest nation on earth – no one should fall into financial ruin because of an illness.

Maine Democrats and consumers praised the Supreme Court decision upholding President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, while conservatives called it “an assault on personal liberty.”

The court voted 6-3 Thursday in favor of Xavier Alvarez, a former local elected official in California who falsely claimed he was a decorated war veteran.

Maine groups and political leaders are issuing statements today following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the national Affordable Care Act.

For Obama, the decision vindicates his most significant legislative accomplishment.

Polls will be open at the town office until 8 p.m. today.
