ATHENS — No one was injured when a fire started early this morning at Maine Wood Pellets Co. LLC mill on Harmony Road.

Emergency crews from several area communities — Athens, Cornville, Harmony, Madison and Skowhegan — responded.

Athens Fire Chief Travis Thompson said the fire, which was reported at 3:11 a.m., damaged a sawdust shed and some siding on the outside of the building. He said an aerial firetruck from the Skowhegan Fire Department assisted in dousing the flames quickly.

Thompson said about 25 firefighters were on the scene for about 2 /12 hours.

Fire crews from four area towns also responded to a fire at the mill in April, and minor fires have occurred there in the past. Thompson said the company has taken steps to improve fire safety recently by adding new fire protection equipment.
