City man charged with car burglaries
AUGUSTA — Police said they caught a city man red-handed during a spree of Sunday morning car burglaries that took him from a downtown bar to Sewall Street.
Jason Tardiff, 23, of Augusta, was arrested and charged with one count each of burglary from a motor vehicle and theft from a motor vehicle after police caught him at the corner of Sewall and Winthrop streets with stolen goods in hand, said Sgt. Vicente Morris of the Augusta Police Department.
At 2:35 a.m., police received a report of a suspicious activity on Sewall Street. Later, a car burglary was reported at Shenanigans, a Water Street bar.
“He started over at Shenanigans,” Morris said of Tardiff. “He continued up Western Avenue, then up Melville, Green and Sewall.”
Morris said Tardiff had wallets, car keys and loose change from the vehicles in his possession, but police haven’t estimated a value of the stolen goods.
Morris said Tardiff admitted to stealing from 10 cars. He said more charges could be upcoming.
