(AP) — Maine coach Jack Cosgrove summed up the Black Bears’ 35-21 loss to No. 18 Northwestern on Saturday succinctly. “I thought maybe if we don’t throw two interceptions they run back for touchdowns, we’re still playing,” Cosgrove said, referring to the interceptions of Marcus Wasilewski that were returned by linebacker Damien Proby and defensive end Dean Lowry for Northwestern touchdowns.

Saturday at Drummond Field, the Purple Panthers rolled over Old Town, 54-8, behind a bruising ground attack that accounted for more than 300 yards. So far this season Waterville (3-0) has outscored its Eastern Class C opponents 170-30.
