A Newport man charged with gross sexual assault is scheduled to make his first appearance in a Bangor court Monday.

Andrew Hanson, 21, is charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A felony, after allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a 13-year-old girl, said Lt. Randy Wing of the Newport Police Department. He is scheduled to appear in Penobscot County Court Monday.

The incident is said to have taken place in Newport on Jan. 2 and was reported to police by the girl’s father, said Wing. Hanson was arrested at his home on Friday.

A class A felony is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Hanson is in custody at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.
