SKOWHEGAN — A Starks man who was struck by a station wagon while crossing U.S. Route 201 on a snowmobile remained in fair condition Tuesday at Redington-Fairview General Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Peter Rines, 43, was taken to the hospital by ambulance Monday afternoon following the accident in Solon. His injuries were not life threatening, according to a press release from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The cause of the accident appears to have been a mechanical error with the snowmobile, but it is still under investigation, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. There will be no criminal charges, he said Tuesday.

Lancaster said Rines was riding with a group of snowmobilers who were crossing U.S. 201 when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming Chevrolet HHR station wagon.
