Three central Maine baseball players are among the seven finalists for the Dr. John Winkin Award, annually presented to the top senior baseball player in the state.
Dylan Belanger of Valley, Kyle Fletcher of Monmouth, and Devin Warren of Messalonskee are finalists, along with Anthony Haskell of Sacopee Valley, Will D’Agostino of Falmouth, Ben Greenberg of Scarborough, and Cody Collins of Bangor.
The Winkin Award will be presented June 27 at Husson University in Bangor, at approximately 6:30 p.m., between the Class C/D and Class A/B all-star games.
A catcher/pitcher, Belanger was the East/West Conference Player of the Year. Belanger hit .583 for the Cavaliers, with 18 runs and 18 RBIs. On the mound, Belanger went 5-2.
“He’s a reluctant pitcher,” said his father, Valley coach Paul Belanger. “He did it because we didn’t have many arms.”
Belanger will attend the University of Maine in the fall and major in engineering.
The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A Player of the Year, Warren is a four-year starter for Messalonskee. This season, the center fielder/pitcher has a .574 batting average, with 24 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Warren also has 14 stolen bases and an on base percentage of .581. Warren also is one of the Eagles’ top pitchers.
“He’s steady, clutch,” Messalonskee coach Ray Bernier said. “He’s very cool and calm no matter what the situation is.”
Fletcher was named the Mountain Valey Conference Player of the Year. The center fielder and reliever went 3-0 on the mound with an earned run average of 1.07, striking out 30 batters in 25 innings. He also hit .520 with 18 RBIs and scored 26 runs.
