One person was taken to the hospital Tuesday after a crash on U.S. Route 202 in Winthrop.

Joseph Toner, 28, of Durham, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries, said Winthrop Police Capt. Ryan Frost.

The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. near Victory Baptist Church, just east of the Monmouth town line, as Toner drove a 2003 Nissan sedan east on Route 202. The car veered to the left and went across the westbound lane and into a ditch, where it hit a post, Frost said.

Toner, who was alone in the car, was wearing a seat belt, Frost said.

A crash report indicates Toner left his lane when he became distracted, though it did not specify how Toner was distracted.

There are no charges connected to the crash.

The crash is the first to cause injury on the troubled section of road since September when the Maine Department of Transportation added centerline rumble strips to alert drivers who veer out of their lane. There are no rumble strips in the area the crash occurred, however.
