FAIRFIELD — Police are investigating a report of possible child abuse involving injuries to a young child over the weekend.

The alleged victim in the case is a one-year-old girl from New Hampshire, Police Chief Thomas Gould said Thursday.

“The victim was alleged to have been at a Fairfield home last week,” Gould said. “When she returned to her family in New Hampshire, she had bruising to her head and was taken to the hospital.”

Fairfield police were called to a Main Street home at 1:54 p.m. Saturday, according to the police department’s radio log. There is no mention of the call on the Somerset County dispatch log for the same time period.

Gould said the report came in as a tip from a caller, and it is not known exactly where or how the injury occurred. He said it is also possible that the injuries were the result of an accident or a fall and not an assault.

“We are awaiting medical records and statements from the family as to where this may have occurred before we can proceed,” he said.
