SKOWHEGAN — It was over in a blue flash and a big boom, but it didn’t knock out power long enough Sunday afternoon to disrupt television broadcast of the NFC and AFC championship football games, the latter one featuring the New England Patriots.
Three circuit breakers on power lines near the Weston Station hydroelectric dam on Island Avenue blew at once Sunday afternoon, creating a stir on social media, but no damage.
“I heard a loud electric buzz then a big boom,” said Hope Savage, who lives on Alder Street near the Skowhegan Swinging Bridge. “I looked out my kitchen window toward the island and then saw an explosion of blue like a fireball. The power went off and went right back on. It was pretty loud.”
Electrical power went out briefly around 1:15 p.m., but soon was restored, according to Skowhegan Fire Chief Shawn Howard.
Howard said the department got a report of electrical wires arcing when the breakers tripped at the Brookfield and Central Maine Power Co. substation on the island behind the Federated Church.
He said there were no reports of trees or power lines down elsewhere, but ice from Sunday’s freezing rain may have played a role in the breakers blowing.
“When the breakers trip on top of the pole, it opens circuit to kill power to the line,” Howard said.
A spokeswoman for Central Maine Power said there were no reports of widespread outages associated with the Skowhegan problem.
