A Waterville man was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Bangor, charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl four separate times in Brewer in August 2013, an assistant district attorney said.

Mark D. Meierdirk, 41, will be notified when to appear in court, and if he fails to show up, a warrant will be issued for his arrest, according to Alice Clifford, assistant district attorney with the Penobscot district attorney’s office.

Clifford said late Wednesday afternoon that the grand jury returned the indictment in unified court. An indictment is not an indication of guilt, but a determination there is enough evidence to go forward with a prosecution.

She said Meierdirk was 40 when the assaults allegedly occurred, but would release no other details about the case.

A list of grand jury indictments issued Wednesday lists Meierdirk as being charged with four counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

Meierdirk formerly owned a roofing company in Unity and was a member of the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce based in Waterville. The chamber’s territory includes Unity.

Kimberly N. Lindlof, president and chief executive officer of the chamber, said Wednesday that she had not spoken with Meierdirk in a long time. She recalled he regularly attended the chamber’s Business After Hours event.

“He used to be a member, but he hasn’t been a member in years, and we haven’t seen him in ages,” Lindlof said.
