The developers of Point East Maritime Village on the banks of the Sheepscot River in Wiscasset once billed the mixed use development as the new home to 80 single-family cottages, 160 condominium units, retail shops, restaurants, boutiques, an art gallery and a 239-slip marina.

But last week Maine’s highest court ruled that the failed project owes the town of Wiscasset nearly $846,000 in back property taxes.

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled that a Lincoln County judge was correct in 2013 when he ruled that Mason Station LLC failed to respond in a timely manner and offered no excuse after the town filed a complaint against the owner for taxes owed. Justices said the lower court did not abuse its discretion.

National RE/source, a Connecticut company specializing in the redevelopment of old industrial sites, purchased the 33-acre Mason Station power plant and surrounding property in 2004. But the project never materialized – only two spec houses were built – and the company failed to keep up with its municipal tax payments.
