Homelessness follows the neglect of arable land and the concentration of population into urban areas. I worked in the Phoenix area last winter. The number of homeless women and men in that is perhaps greater than the number in the entire state of Maine. Welfare exacerbates the condition.
Gandhi considered money without work to be a deadly sin. With us, it has become hereditary, in some cases into the fifth and sixth generations.
When one working man has to share a loaf of bread with six or seven who do not work, there may be civil unrest and disturbances; a conflict that will make the Civil War look like it barely happened.
This is what our governor is trying to prevent by attempting to lead effective government; one founded on the basis of merit and example. He has my vote.
