I have just read the article in the Morning Sentinel regarding the “miscount” error for the Miss 4th of July pageant, (“Defiant Miss 4th of July contestant withdraws from pageant,” July 2) and the reaction to this human error from the contestants.
Molly Lybrook and her “outraged” parents need a new attitude adjustment. Lybrook decided against sharing the crown and the spotlight because she believes that she “won fair and square.” What part of “miscount” and “human error” didn’t she understand? She did not win, period.
Kudos to Caitlin Grenier, the real winner of Winslow’s 4th of July pageant. She not only scored the highest to win this contest, she’s also graceful, honorable and a true winner of heart. She didn’t mind sharing, in the interest of both parties.
This is an opportunity for Lybrook to learn an important lesson: Life isn’t fair. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. Sometimes the only thing standing between a “winner” and a “loser” is the grace with which one accepts their status and the confident knowledge that at many times during our lives, we will be both. And that is life.
