Molly Lybrook decided to bow out of the Winslow 4th of July competition and not share the crown after meeting with judges Wednesday night.

Consumer fireworks sales in Maine have declined since an initial spike when the state dropped its ban in 2012, but fireworks store owners say sales have stabilized.

In the fourth summer since the state ban on consumer fireworks was lifted, finding a balance is still a struggle.

Supporters of the $4 million effort say they’ll continue to raise money on their own and that funding could come through in 2016.
