A motorcyclist was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a Lewiston hospital Sunday afternoon following a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 2 in Mercer, police said.

Clifford Berry, 60, of Worcester, Massachussetts, was driving a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet, said Chief Deputy James Ross of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

He suffered head injuries and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. His condition wasn’t available late Monday afternoon.

The accident was reported just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Route 2 and Valley Road, Ross said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation and further information on what happened was not available Monday.

The Norridgewock Fire Department responded to the scene.
