WINTHROP — Dima Gosselin scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter and Xavier Downing ran in the two-point conversion as Boothbay (2-5) stunned Winthrop/Monmouth (4-3) 8-6 in a Campbell Conference Class D South game Friday night at Maxwell Field.
Winthrop/Monmouth — which played without a pair of two-way starters — will more than likely go into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed and host Maranacook (4-3) in the opening round of the playoffs.
“We had no Nate Scott, no Bennett Brooks,” Ramblers coach Dave St. Hilaire said. “They ended up after the first drive shifting to a six-man front and took away Alec Brown, and we couldn’t really exploit them outside.”
The Ramblers scored midway through the fourth quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ingram to Antonio Meucci, but the ensuing snap on the two-point conversion was fumbled to keep Boothbay in front. The Seahawks managed to run out the clock from there.
