A 5-year-old girl lost in the woods near Five Season Road in Mount Vernon Sunday afternoon was located safely following a 60-minute search.
According to a media release from Kennebec County Interim Sheriff Ryan Reardon, Sunny Cahill was reported missing at 1:29 p.m. by her family.
They were in the forest splitting wood when the girl walked toward the house, but they soon discovered she had not reached it and began calling for her without getting a response.
Deputies responded, including Deputy Aaron Moody and K-9 Stryker, who began tracking her.
“After about an hour of searching, Sunny was located about half a mile from the home off the trail by a family member,” Reardon said in the release. “The K-9 team was not far away on the trail.”
The blonde-haired girl was in a pink winter coat and cowgirl boots.
“Sunny was dressed for the conditions. However, for a 5-year-old to cover that distance punctuates the importance of being prepared,” he said. “On a rainy day with temps in the 50s, a person that young and with no experience in the woods, this was a serious and dangerous situation.”
The girl had been missing a total of 90 minutes.
“This ended the best way possible,” Reardon said. “We are relieved that she is happy, healthy and warm. Her first sentence to deputies on scene was ‘I think I’m going to be grounded.’ I doubt that. We are just happy she is safe.”
