WATERVILLE — The Thomas College men’s soccer team captured its fourth North Atlantic Conference championship in six seasons with a 5-4 victory in a shootout over Castleton State on Saturday at Smith Field.
After the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in regulation, the Terriers won it in the seventh round of penalty kicks when London Steede-Jackson beat reigning NAC Defensive Player of the Year Amir Pasic for the game-winning goal. A save from Thomas back-up goaltender Jonathan Dutka on Sawyer Shane moments earlier set up the win.
Castleton had a chance to get the win after taking a 3-2 lead after three rounds, but a miss from Solo Felekeni and goal by Lukas Bohman extended the match,
The two teams played to a 1-1 draw at the half but Thomas took control in the 71st minute when Tre Ming converted a penalty kick after Steede-Jackson drew a foul in the box. The Spartans knotted the match with 2:39 remaining, though, when Cameron Rossi-Crete scored past a diving Joakim Sternas.
Sternas — Thomas’ starting goalkeeper — was injured on the play, but remained in the game until the start of overtime when he gave way to Dutka.
The win gives Thomas (13-4-1) an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Terriers will find out their seeding and opponent Monday.
