It is such a small thing; the use of language by the editors of the newspaper, but would any reader south of the Kittery bridge make any sense of what “looking to” means? (“Clinton looks to hire new town police officer,” Nov. 8).
As a novice reporter for a small rural weekly back in the days of linotype machines, I gathered information and wrote the story, and the managing editor was responsible for the headlines.
If I used vernacular in my copy, my literacy, competence, future career and position in the evolutionary chain were put into question. I respectfully suggest a tad more adherence to standard English from our newspaper.
