A Waldo County man who police say punched in the wrong number on his cell phone trying to buy two pounds of marijuana last month is free on bail after his arrest on drug trafficking charges.

Randolph West, 51, of Files Hill Road in Thorndike, thought he was calling a pot supplier, but instead got the number of an investigator with the attorney general’s office, Waldo County Sheriff Jeffrey Trafton said Friday.

“He tried to make a drug deal with him, but once the investigator realized what he was trying to do, he played along and we ended up setting up the buy and we took him down at the Troy General Store,” Trafton said.

He said the deal was $2,400 for two pounds of marijuana negotiated in a series of several phone calls as the detective played along.

West, who is well known to area police, Trafton said, was arrested and taken to the Waldo County Jail in Belfast. Police found $2,400 in cash on him.

He went before a judge Nov. 12 and was released on $1,000 cash bail and a Maine pre-trial contract.
