AUGUSTA — Old Fort Western will present an Old Time Christmas open house from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, as part of the Riverfront Holiday Celebration, sponsored by the City of Augusta and the Augusta Downtown Alliance.
People can take a ride on a horse-drawn hay wagon, then warm themselves around a bonfire while they listen to the South Parish Congregational Church Choir. Inside the Fort, they can sit near the fireplace in the parlor and experience a 19th-century Victorian Christmas. Children and adults can participate in decorative paper-cutting by the hearth and listen to a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” in the barracks room by candlelight. Afterwards, people can view the city’s traditional holiday tree lighting and fireworks display at Waterfront Park beginning at 5 p.m.
Admission is free of charge, however donations are always welcome and proceeds benefit educational programs, the preservation of the Fort, and the promotion and continued research of history in the Kennebec Valley.
