What is it that Augusta’s city councilors are not getting about single-stream recycling? In the Dec. 11 Kennebec Journal it was reported that a new recycle truck body will cost $50,000. The new body is necessary to continue curbside pickup of recycles. Because of that, the city is considering discontinuing curbside pickup.

First, is that $50,000 to replace the three-bay sorted-for-curbside body with one of the same? If so, why? Does our discarded paper, glass and plastic go to two different places? If so, why? I would be interested in knowing why Augusta has two versions of how to recycle.

Second, we are an aging society. Many of us no longer drive or if we do may not be able to do the lift and reach required to use the recycling trailer. Winter is coming and that may keep some people from getting to the recycling trailers. Give a moment of thought to what that might cause to happen.
