Tuesday’s storm will shorten the full day of high school hoops scheduled for Wednesday at the Augusta Civic Center, but the 21st Capital City Hoops Classic still has plenty of action on tap.

Forest Hills and Rangeley had to postpone their boys/girls doubleheader scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. due to the hazardous travel conditions on Tuesday. That means the exhibition game between Hampden Academy and Boothbay girls will tip off the tournament at 11 a.m., with six more games to follow.

Local fans will still be able to watch Forest Hills and Rangeley in action, just one day later.

With the early scheduled start, teams from both schools had planned to travel to the area on Tuesday and spend the night at Augusta hotels. Instead, they will travel to Augusta on Thursday for the girls game at 11 a.m. and the boys game at 12:30 p.m., Forest Hills boys basketball coach and athletic director Anthony Amero said.

“We decided to pool the money we were going to use for the hotels and rent out the Civic Center on Thursday,” Amero said. “We really wanted to be there (Wednesday), not only for the chance to play in the Civic Center but to watch some other good games on the schedule. We were fortunate to be invited to it and excited to play but we were just victims of circumstance.”

Wednesday’s action continues with another exhibition game between Cony and Waterville at 12:30 p.m.

The next four contests, all boys games, will count in the Heal point standings. The first two pit Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference rivals, with the opening tap for Lawrence (2-4) vs. Erskine (1-5) scheduled for 2 p.m., followed by Waterville (2-4) and Messalonskee (3-2) at 3:30 p.m..

At 5 p.m., Mountain Valley Conference foes Winthrop and Dirigo, both 6-0, will have the first of their two regular-season meetings. Dirigo is the home team for this matchup.

The KVAC returns to the court at 6:30 p.m. with host Cony (3-3) taking on Oxford Hills (5-1). The Vikings feature University of Maine-bound star Andrew Fleming.

Hampden Academy and Portland wrap up the slate at 8 p.m. in an exhibition rematch of last year’s Class A boys state championship, which Hampden won, 70-50, at the Civic Center.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and good for the entire day.
