AUGUSTA — Hampden Academy hasn’t been beaten in the Class A North tournament during senior guard Nick Gilpin’s high school career. During Saturday night’s quarterfinal against a stubborn Skowhegan team, Gilpin showed he has no intentions of letting it happen, either.
Gilpin scored 34 points to go along with six rebounds, seven steals, five assists and two blocks to lead Hampden to a 63-47 victory at the Augusta Civic Center.
Ian McIntyre added eight points and 10 rebounds for Hampden (19-0). Cameron Barnes led Skowhegan (10-10) with 15 points while Isaac Witham chipped in with 11.
Hampden will face fifth-seeded Oceanside in a semifinal here on Wednesday night.
Gilpin scored 20 in the first half, then the Broncos’ first 12 points of the second half. But the Indians battled to within 12 on a Witham hoop near the end of the third quarter. Gilpin opened the fourth with a three-point play, then a steal and a dunk to make it 52-35 Broncos and essentially put the game away.
The Indians didn’t get the start they wanted. Gilpin scored the game’s first 10 points and 12 in the opening quarter. Witham went to the bench with two fouls midway through the period and Hampden opened up a 19-7 lead.
Back-to-back 3s from Gilpin pushed Hampdens’ lead to 34-14 in the second quarter before Barnes (eight points in the quarter) and Marcus Christopher warmed up from the outside to pull the Indians back within 15, 40-25, at the half.
