ORONO — Daniel Perez knocked a loose puck into the net 1:49 into overtime Saturday and the Maine hockey team celebrated a 3-2 victory over Merrimack on Senior Night at Alfond Arena.
Perez, a freshman, scored his second career goal by emerging from a scrum in front of Warriors goaltender Drew Vogler and getting two chances to slam the puck past him.
Maine had blown a two-goal lead in the final 2 minutes of regulation.
After two scoreless periods, Maine (8-20-6, 5-13-2 Hockey East) got on the board at 9:48 of the third when senior captain Steven Swavely swooped through the crease to swat a rebound past Merrimack freshman goaltender Drew Vogler.
Cam Brown made it a 2-0 lead at 14:13 when his initial shot was saved by Vogler, but he skated in from the right circle to gather the puck out front and fired it high into the net for a power-play goal.
Merrimack (9-16-7, 3-10-7) pulled Vogler for an extra attacker and got an immediate goal from Chris LeBlanc on a one-timer at 18:17 of the third.
Brett Seney tied it 2-2 with 22 seconds left when he deflected a shot from the point past McGovern.
Maine concludes the regular season with a series at Northeastern next weekend.
