AUGUSTA — Firefighters responding to a report of a possible structure fire Wednesday on School Street determined that smoke in the home was caused by a blocked stove pipe and chimney.
The residential street, which runs between Bangor Street and South Belfast Avenue, was closed for about an hour and a half as firefighters investigated.
Firefighters, upon arrival at 37 School St. about 3 p.m., found smoke in the second-story bathroom. The homeowner had a wood stove going in the home, although the room with the wood stove was not near the bathroom where the smoke was discovered, according to Battalion Chief Jason Farris.
Firefighters checked all three floors of the home, removed the smoke from the home and used a thermal imaging camera to determine a stove pipe for the wood stove was “90 percent plugged, and the chimney was 100 percent plugged,” Farris said.
Firefighters cleaned out the chimney enough to remove the remainder of the smoke from the home and advised the owner to have the chimney cleaned professionally before using the stove again.
