The comments in the Kennebec Journal by Frank O’Hara (“Making Hallowell streets safe,” May 6) and Jon Lund (“Curb extensions needed on Water Street,” May 7) prompted us to write.

We are emphatically opposed to the “bumpouts” on Water Street because they really won’t be the magic solution these gentlemen seem to imagine. As far as safety is concerned, if some people don’t use crosswalks now, what makes you think that “bumpouts” will alter their habits?

One suggestion by O’Hara, however, does bear some merit — that of adding color to the crosswalks themselves, drawing more attention to those places. And paint probably wouldn’t add so much cost to the beleaguered taxpayer, whose economic situation is already quite burdensome.

In addition, painted crosswalks won’t incur the nightmare of plowing around those “bumpouts” for our roadcrews — no matter how attractive, pleasing to the eye, and “user friendly” the design consultants endeavor to make them.

Ultimately, the real answer lies in the fact that care, common sense and responsibility must be exercised by both drivers and pedestrians. We believe (and we’re not alone) that is the better way for Hallowell to best be served.
