Water quality is of great concern in the Belgrade Watershed, across the state and beyond. A simple way for everyone, not just those with waterfront property, is to practice Best Management Practices or BMPs. It means just what it says, managing your property with water quality of rivers, streams and lakes in mind. After rain, run-off from your property may contain harmful to water bodies phosphorous. Phosphorous overloading in lakes leads to algal blooms which can look like green slime on the surface at the same time depleting water of necessary nutrients and oxygen for plants and animals to live.
