The editorial on Acadia is absolutely right; the impacts of climate change harm our clean air and national parks, lead to increased asthma attacks and other lung problems and a whole slew of other health issues (“Acadia’s anniversary should draw attention to importance of clean air,” July 1).

The Clean Power Plan is a great first step toward cleaning up our air, but we also need to look at cleaning up our cars if we want to truly make a difference to the air quality in Maine and avert the worst impacts of climate change.

Transportation accounts for over a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, so we need to support federal regulations that aim to increase the efficiency of our vehicles. We need to make sure auto companies are producing the most fuel efficient cars possible and that our buses and big trucks are held to similar standards for efficiency.

Only through cleaning up all major sources of carbon pollution can we actually expect to improve the atmosphere for everyone.
