A Monmouth woman who was sitting on her porch and holding a baby was bitten by a rabid fox Tuesday evening.

The woman, who lives on Cobbossee Road near the intersection with Fish Hatchery Road, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment and released, Monmouth police Chief Kevin Mulherin said.

A neighbor killed the fox shortly after it bit the woman. Its body was taken to a state laboratory, where it tested positive for rabies, Mulherin said.

The incident took place sometime before 9 p.m. Tuesday. The woman is taking the appropriate medication, Mulherin said.

Last summer, a gray fox tested positive for rabies after attacking a pair of men in Monmouth and getting shot. In the summer of 2014, a rabid raccoon was found in town, Mulherin said.

Mulherin advised any residents who see animals they suspect of being rabid to call the police at 377-7226.
