What a political mess! The key word that unravels all this is “change.” The American public wanted change. They didn’t care what change. Trump and Sanders represented change and the public didn’t care which as long they got change.
But the Democratic National Committee did not want Sanders involved. So they discouraged those considering Sanders, wanting instead to get the first woman into the White House, even though all the polls showed that Bernie had a better chance of beating Trump than Hillary did.
And the pundits ignored the public’s demand for change. Hillary tried to represent change by pretending to agree with Bernie on some subjects but her past would not let her because she had always been the spokesperson for the “Establishment.”
So with Bernie out of the way the public had only one change candidate, Trump, and that’s the one who won.
