HOULTON — Maine’s U.S. senators say American Indian tribes in Maine will receive more than $800,000 from the federal government to assist with housing.
The money is from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Indian Housing Block Grant. The Penobscot Indian Nation is receiving the largest grant at more than $260,000.
The Pleasant Point Reservation Housing Authority is receiving $220,000, the Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians is getting more than $175,000 and the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians Housing Authority is getting more than $140,000.
Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King say the money will help the tribes maintain and improve affordable housing availability. Collins is a Republican and King is an independent.
