A 41-year old man was killed Sunday evening when his pickup truck struck a tree and caught fire in the Franklin County town of Avon, police said.

Jason Flagg, of Strong, died at the scene, according to a news release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The crash took place on Mile Square Road just after 6 p.m. State police troopers cited speed as the likely cause of the crash, McCausland said.

Avon, home to a section of Mt. Blue State Park, is located along Route 4 between the towns of Phillips and Strong in Franklin County.

It was the fourth highway death of the weekend in Maine, McCausland said. A man died Friday night when his pickup overturned in Lebanon, and another man was killed in Searsmont in a two-vehicle crash on Route 3. Saturday night, a motorcyclist died in a crash in Hollis.
