The driver of a truck died late Thursday night in Freeport after he collided with a van that had swerved to avoid a deer, state police said.

Dana Thibeault, 52, of Durham, who was driving a tractor trailer cab which was not pulling a load, died at the scene, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state police.

McCausland said both vehicles were traveling southbound on I-295, and the van swerved into the path of the truck, causing the accident near the Desert Road exit.

Both vehicles overturned. The occupants of the van, Mark and Marie Fleming, both 52, from Cape Elizabeth, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
