The Belgrade fire chief said the cause of the fire, which damaged the home’s interior Friday morning, appeared to be accidental.

The 9-year-old is believed to have suffered a serious head injury when he tumbled roughly 20 feet from a rooftop.

Fire Chief David LaFountain said the fire started in a heating and air conditioning unit on the roof.

A police affidavit doesn’t say why the state oversaw the youth, who suffered a fatal blow to her abdomen and showed signs of past abuse.
