Maine Central Institute pitcher/shortstop Pedro Matos and Bridgeway pitcher/catcher Evan Bess were named finalists for the Dr. John Winkin “Mr. Baseball” Award on Monday.
Matos is the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B player of the year while Bess was named a Mountain Valley Conference Class C South Player of the Year for the Bandits, a Madison/Carrabec co-op team.
Both will attend the University of Maine in Orono next season.
The other finalists include: P/1B Grant Hartley (Edward Little HS); C Cameron King (Portland): P/SS Cam Cousins (Wells HS); C Brendan Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth); OF Shane MacNeill (Traip Academy); P Jacob Bickford (Dexter); P/SS Dean Grass (Bangor Christian).
The award is given annually to the top senior baseball player in the state by the Maine Baseball Coaches Association.
The winner will be announced about 6:30 p.m. at the Maine Senior All-Star game on June 21 at Colby College.
