Several crashes Friday evening on the Maine Turnpike and Interstate 295 near Portland snarled traffic that’s usually heavy with evening commuters and weekend travelers.

The Maine Turnpike Authority and Maine State Police reported several vehicle accidents, including a crash in the northbound lanes of the turnpike near mile 44.

The Turnpike Authority canceled its alert about heavy traffic from Scarborough to Portland about 6:30 p.m.
