One person was killed Tuesday evening in a fiery crash along Interstate 95 in Hampden, and state police said they were still working to identify the driver of the vehicle who died.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes near mile marker 176 about 5:15 p.m., Maine State Police said in a statement.

The vehicle left the roadway, struck several trees and burst into flames. Drivers reported seeing the vehicle traveling with its four-way flashers on before it veered off the highway.

The vehicle is registered in southern Maine, but the identity of the driver was not clear.

Police said traffic in the southbound lanes near the crash site was slowed considerably.
